How to find your Power – and use it! An interview with Nat McMillan

Apr 19, 2024

You’re strong, successful and smart. But it might take you – just as it does many women around you – longer than it should to recognise and harness that power.

That was the case for Nat, our managing director – at first. Once she found the potential in her power, she used it to champion others and build the McMillan & Associates HR team today.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a woman in leadership?

I started my career in a male-dominated industry. I was the only female in the business, so was often excluded from after-work socialising. (My colleagues once took clients to a lap dancing club.) My knowledge has been regularly underestimated, and I’ve also been judged as a full-time working mum. It’s been tough.

What’s the most important piece of advice you’ve been given?

I used to believe people would recognise me just for doing my job well. Yet one of my first bosses (kindly!) advised me that was naïve: I’d go unnoticed. I regularly tell that to others. We shouldn’t be so modest – but shout loud and be proud of our achievements and successes.

What would you say to other women who aspire to become leaders?

Go for it! Ignore unhelpful social norms – they restrict us and make us think we have to do things in a particular way. Be brave, be rebellious and, most importantly, be true to yourself. Accept that not everyone will like you – when you do, you’ll feel a wonderful sense of liberation.

What do you do to empower yourself and the women around you?

As women, we can always lift each other. I want to share my stories, knowledge, and how I use my power with others, just as others have kindly done for me.

Finding my power has made such a positive difference to my self-worth, career and life. I always try to be a role model and share that, which is one of the reasons I’m so excited to be running the in-person training session ‘How to use your power!’ at our offices on 24 May. We’ll be hosting a small informal group for the morning, where we’ll get to the heart of what it takes to be a strong, effective and successful woman. It’s just £50 + VAT.

Visit our website for details, where you’ll also find more of our upcoming events. This includes April’s mini masterclass covering what you need to know about appraisals, and May’s session about being your authentic self at work.
