The Challenge

The Green Estate Community Interest Company works to transform urban spaces into beautiful landscapes where nature and people can thrive. The company which started in 2003 had grown to employ 70 people and in 2022 began a restructure process to better support the evolving business. To  facilitate these changes across the business it required additional HR resources to work closely with the Green Estates Chief Executive  and key managers across the business.

Our Approach

McMillan and Associates provided strategic advice and guidance to support the restructure, including providing interim HR cover for a three month period to ensure support and stability throughout the whole process.

Our work included:

  • An in-depth Diagnostics Review to understand the current people management systems, identifying the areas which were working well and what could be improved.
  • Running training days to provide the tools and strategies needed for line managers to effectively manage people and understand the key aspects of being a good manager.
  • Working alongside existing teams to offer support and stability through the transition process
  • Empowering and equipping staff across the organisation
  • Reviewing and developing HR systems and processes within the business, to develop a consistent approach and aligned ways of working.

Following the restructuring phase, we continued to work within the business, providing a phased handover with the new Head of People to ensure a smooth transition for the organisation and to capitalise on learning.

The Results

We were able to provide stability and structure at a vital time for Green Estates. Line managers were empowered and upskilled, meaning they developed stronger relationships with their colleagues and were able to lead their teams more effectively. Old processes were streamlined, becoming more effective and responsive to the organisation’s needs.  The senior leadership team was able to focus on taking the organisation forward, knowing that people management was well supported.

“The help and support McMillan have provided us with has been excellent. They were able to come into our complex organisation and help us navigate some very difficult challenges balancing the need for professional and empathetic approaches. I particularly valued their ability to contextualise and find solutions appropriate for our unique set of circumstances. It was worth every penny!”
