Does Britain have an Economic Activity Crisis? By Siobhan Clarke

Former John Lewis boss Sir Charles Mayfield hit the headlines this week warning that the growing number of sick or disabled people out of work is driving the UK towards an Economic activity crisis that will cost the country billions.

Is he right? Well the figures are distressing reading for any employer: 800,000 more people out of work since 2019, an estimated annual cost to employers of £85bn, and an estimated further 600,000 people likely to be forced into economic inactivity through ill health by the end of the decade.

It’s scary stuff for employers and heartbreaking for people who need and want to work but are prevented from gaining work, or staying in work, due to mental and physical health issues.

So what’s the problem? If businesses want willing employees and people want to work, what’s getting in the way?

Employers want to build supportive and inclusive workplaces but can struggle to know how to support health issues in the workplace.

The cost and disruption of absence is difficult for smaller employers to bear, managers may not know what adjustments they could make, or what would work, individuals may fear that being open with their employers could put their jobs at risk.

And when it comes to helping employees with health issues, many businesses don’t have HR departments, staff with specialist training or access to the support and knowledge they need to make a difference.

We understand the need for practical knowledge and support. We are working behind the scenes on a new initiative to deliver the training and advice that businesses require. Look out for future announcements with full details!
